The Gathering Promos

Over the years I have shot a couple of promos for my friends from legendary band The Gathering.

I shot two promos in 2010, for the benefit concert they gave at Teatro Caupolicán in Santiago, Chili on April 11th 2010 for the victims of the earthquake.

I edited and worked with Frank Boeijen on the sound of the first promo for the benefit concert the Gathering in Chile:

Then a couple of days later, when Silje Wergeland arrived in Nijmegen for rehearsals, we shot another promo in Frank’s apartment, where I also shot three acoustic songs that would be performed in Chile, on Radio Futuro.

A year later, 2011 they would embark on a tour of South America and I again shot a promo for them:

The Gathering will be touring South America this summer with their South American Ghostride tour. To help them promote the tour, they asked me to shoot a promovideo for their tour. Last year I also produced two promo’s for the benefit concert they did in Chile for the victims of the earthquake. Them doing a benefit show like that is one of the reasons I like these guys so much!

The promo was shot handheld on the Canon 5D MkII with Canon primes during one of the band’s rehearsal sessions. The “Weatherman” bit was shot on a tripod. There was some nasty rolling shutter as I pan at the end, but for this kind of quick production it’s not that big a deal. Since it was all quite impromptu I didn’t have an external microphone with me, so I ended up using the on-camera mic. It performed better than I expected, actually, although the rehearsal itself was too loud for the mic. I got some nasty distortion as soon as the drums and guitars kicked in. We had fun shooting this thing and hopefully the tour will be a great succes! Look out for more info on the upcoming musicvideo!

It’s funny looking back at these old videos, the first ones were shot on my Panasonic DVX100B with an SGBlade 35mm adapter, but of course all in SD. The last promo was shot on the Canon 5D MkII, but for some reason was rendered to 720p, not 1080p.

At this point I had just returned from shooting Heroes For Ghosts in Norway with Silje and Mads, which was, at the time of shooting of the last promo, still being edited.
