Near the end of 2013, I spent a few days by myself on an island in the North Sea called Ameland. I felt I had to take some time to reflect, think over all that happened in the past year and look forward to the future. I was planning on taking some photos and wander around a little bit, but when I started to look through my lens, I became mesmerised. The island had captured me.
Desolation
I was amazed at how much of what I saw reflected my mood, or maybe I was projecting my mood out through my camera. This project is all about desolation, being alone, and in the end it is also about the realization that you are never completely alone on this blue marble… Or on an island in the North Sea. I had a great experience capturing these images, although I guess I sort of missed 2013 turning into 2014. =)
Tech
The images below were shot on a Canon 5D mkII with an array of different lenses. A number of the photographs were shot at night with long exposures. I edited all of it in Adobe’s Creative Suite 6 with a few plugins for color correction and effects.
