There’s not a lot I like doing more than shooting portraits. I am fascinated by the faces, the gazes, the thoughts behind the eyes, the universe that is another mind. All these beautiful, complex, inspiring people I encounter represent opportunities for a fantastic portrait to me. I want to capture just a bit of who they are in my photos.
Trust
One of the most important things you need to have to be able to shoot a portrait is trust. If the person in front of the lens doesn’t trust me, then it’s not going to happen, the magic’s not there. But if they do trust me, then after a while the camera starts to become less of an intrusion and it becomes more of a dialogue, communication between me and my model.
Friends and Strangers
Many of the people in the portraits below are my friends, but I have also taken portraits of strangers. Both have their own challenges, friends know you, they might feel uncomfortable showing another side of them, opening up. Strangers don’t know you at all and don’t know what they are getting in to, having their picture taken. I am surprised though at how easy it sometimes is, to coax someone I don’t know to allow me to take a few shots.
Tech
The images below were shot on a Canon 5D mkII with an array of different lenses. I like shooting using available light. I haven’t done any studiowork including lighting yet, but I’d imagine it would be fun to try my hand at that as well. For now I do like the natural look of available light and the freedom it gives me to run and gun.
